Why this site exists

Image-resolution terminology is unusually confusing.

People are often told that an image “must be 300 DPI” without being told whether that means:

  • an embedded density value
  • a particular number of pixels
  • a physical print size
  • effective PPI after placement
  • a printer’s hardware DPI

Those are not interchangeable concepts.

DPIConverter.live is intended to make the operation visible. Where a conversion changes metadata only, the site should say so. Where it changes pixel dimensions through resampling, the site should say that too.

What the tools can and cannot tell you

A calculator can tell you that a 3000-pixel-wide image placed 10 inches wide has 300 effective PPI.

It cannot tell you, from that number alone, whether the photograph is in focus, whether a print lab will accept the file or whether a government will approve a passport photograph.

Likewise, changing a density tag from 72 to 300 does not create missing photographic detail.

The tools are designed to help with the measurable part of the workflow while making the remaining limitations clear.

The planned application processes uploaded images temporarily when server-side processing is required and does not intentionally retain those uploads after the requested processing is complete.

The production implementation should be verified against the Privacy Policy before launch. If the architecture changes, the public privacy language must change with it.

Corrections
